P.H.O.B.O.S. – Phlogiston Catharsis – Album Review

For fans of Mysticum, DHG, Blacklodge, Blut Aus Nord....

P.H.O.B.O.S. are a mind-fucking jumble of distortion, an industrial metal collusion with black metal you don’t see coming and an enterprising force of crude yet mechanical sounds which never fail to unnerve. To put it bluntly, P.H.O.B.O.S. are your worst nightmares made flesh…..but they do make a hellishly convincing case for being considered masters of their craft!

Phlogiston Catharsis takes its cues from the pioneering work of Mysticum and the continued deviance of DHG but this sickening blast of black metal/industrialised doom weaves its own unique and diabolical spell.

These French extremists kickstart your journey with “Biomorphorror” – which sounds like Satyr fronting Ministry on a particularly nasty drug-addled day – and its churning, mechanised warfare will rupture body parts you didn’t know could fracture and splinter. Dark and decidedly demonic, P.H.O.B.O.S. specialise in repetition and the ever-agitated rhythms of “Igneous Tephrapotheosis” and “Taqiyah Rhyzom” continuously undulate with a fervour not heard since Godflesh arrived on the scene all those years ago.

Like rats, the 8 tracks found on Phlogiston Catharsis scurry at your feet, chipping away at your reserve until you crumble beneath its crushing weight. You’ll not hear much to rival Phlogiston Catharsis in 2018 and those with a hearty appetite for the extreme will gorge on this epic excursion into sonic damnation for the remainder of the year! 8/10

Phlogiston Catharsis is set for release on September 10, 2018 via Transcending Obscurity Records.
