Cosmic Putrefaction – Crepuscular Dirges For The Blessed Ones – Album Review
A contender for death metal album of the year!
Italy is a country revered for its art and filmic output, especially to those of us who have an undying passion for unique filmmakers such as Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento and Sergio Martino. Yet, Italian death metal isn’t particularly a common commodity in the underground metal market. Fortunately, twisted mastermind and prolific extreme metal artist Gabriele Gramaglia (Summit, Turris Eburnea, Vertebra Atlantis, The Clearing Path) has created a lysergic-ally enhanced death metal masterpiece, with his band Cosmic Putrefaction, that may finally put Italy on the extreme metal / death metal map. One thing is for sure, with Profound Lore Records behind them, Cosmic Putrefaction will get more attention on this side of the pond.
Crepuscular Dirges For The Blessed Ones is an extraordinary and dizzying journey into a mind-altering realm of extreme metal that precious few of us have dared venture to before. Along with stellar drummer Giulio Galati (Hideous Divinity), Gramaglia has unleashed one hell of an unholy attack; one that utilises brutal virtuoso guitar (that comes tempered by plenty of melody), trippy keyboard work and mind-bending song writing.
Morbid Angel may first come to mind as an influence but that’s because Cosmic Putrefaction have travelled into a similar death metal universe occupied by those denizens of atonal noise. We’d go as far as to say that Gramaglia is gifted with the same sort of insane musical genius as Trey Azagthoth and it’s no stretch to suggest that on Crepuscular…., Cosmic Putrefaction exhibit a similar musical madness to Morbid Angel at their most unhinged.
This is Cosmic Putrefaction’s third release after 2019’s At The Threshold Of The Greatest Chasm and 2020’s The Horizons Towards Which Splendour Withers (both of which were released via I Voidhanger – a truly underground and respected Italian label who are known for their cutting-edge extreme bands). If Crepuscular Dirges For The Blessed Ones is any indication of the immense talent and creativity that Gramaglia seemingly has in abundance, then you would do well to track those LPs down as well via Bandcamp (sadly, the CD versions are sold out).
Profound Lore is known for releasing amazing extreme music and with Cosmic Putrefaction‘s Crepuscular Dirges For The Blessed Ones they’ve outdone themselves. One thing is for sure, if you do choose to enter Gabriele Gramaglia’s bizarre world, we advise you to sit down, give it your full and undivided attention and prepare to soak up its immenseness. You have been warned! 10/10
