The 10 Death Metal Albums You NEEDED To Hear in 2021 (January-March)

Lovely, lovely death metal.....

Frozen Soul – Crypt Of Ice [United States]

Released: January 8th 2021 via Century Media Records

The sound of old-school death metal needn’t be fucked with and Texas’ Frozen Soul are evidently not interested in messing with a winning formula on their outstanding debut full length album, Crypt of Ice.

Embracing the overall barbaric simplicity, groove and power of prime early 90’s death metal, Crypt of Ice is purpose built to appeal to fans of Obituary, Grave and Bolt Thrower (which is everyone, right?).

So, throw on something warm and dive in…..the water’s icy! 8/10

Revulsion – Revulsion [Finland]

Album Revulsion, Revulsion | Qobuz: download and streaming in high quality

Released: February 5th, 2021 via Transcending Obscurity Records

Finnish death metal kicks ass. Serious ass. With a long lineage of high quality bands emerging from Finland’s shores since the early 90’s (Amorphis, Convulse, Demigod, Demilich, Depravity, Purtenance to name but a few) expectations are always high for a new name in Finnish death metal to come along and blow our fuckin’ socks off.

Revulsion are one such band.

With a punishing low end and oodles of groove, Revulsion are a satisfying mix of both the old and new, taking obvious cues from their forefathers while also setting their sights on the future of the genre. In fact, Revulsion‘s appropriation of recognisable melodic death metal, death/doom and brutal death metal influences actually leads to a welcome diversity – as opposed to over-familiarity – and their powerful grooves will have you head-banging for a fortnight (could be longer, depends on your tolerance for such things). 8/10

Sanguisugabogg – Tortured Whole (United States)

SANGUISUGABOGG "Tortured Whole" LP - Evil Greed

Released: March 26th, 2021 via Century Media Records

Primitive, sloppy, disgusting and full of sickening humour, Sanguisugabogg deliver the kind of death metal that appeals to the most basic human impulses (and the average death metal fan) without sounding like Six Feet Under (bonus) as they tap into that childish part in all of us that still finds farts but-gustingly funny.

Death metal for proud neanderthals – whose tolerance for gore and the blackest of black humour knows no bounds – will get a kick (probably in the balls) out of the likes of “Dead as Shit” and “Gored in the Chest”.

Chug. Chug. Chug. Urrgghhh. That’s what you’re getting…..and you’ll fuckin’ love it too! 7/10
