Candlemass – Sweet Evil Sun – Album Review

Sweet, sweet doom....

These legendary Swedes need little to no introduction. Everything from their groundbreaking debut, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, through the original Messiah Marcolin fronted years (Nightfall, Ancient Dreams, Tales Of Creation) and on to the Thomas Vikström helmed Chapter VI are untouchable doom metal classics of the highest order.

Fast forward to 2022 and Candlemass are, thankfully, not only still relevant, they’re still blasting out thunderous doom that’s unmistakably, well, Candlemass!

More well-rounded than 2019’s patchy The Door To Doom, Candlemass sound more nimble here, more enthused even and when “Wizard Of The Vortex” blasts out of the gate, you’re left in no doubt that messrs Edling, Björkman, Lindh, Johansson & Längqvist still mean serious doom business.

With aforementioned original vocalist Johan Längqvist firmly back in the fold, the band hark back to their 80s glory days without once sounding pastiche and without relying too heavily on their own legacy. The riffs are HEAVY, the grooves are solid and tracks like “Devil Voodoo” are as achingly solemn yet hard rockin’ as they come – pure, old-school, 70s doom vibes delivered in Candlemass‘ own inimitable way. 8/10
