Kal-El – Astrodoomeda – Album Review
Look to the skies....
These Norwegian stoner rock/metal merchants made quite the splash with their sophomore effort, 2015’s Echosphere, and the space-rockers are now primed to blast-off with album number three, the amusingly titled Astrodoomeda!
With plenty of propulsive thrust, Kal-El revel in the kinds of space-o-rama perfected by Monster Magnet and Nebula but there’s more than enough room out there in the universe for another cosmic force and Kal-El are that band. With a strong Ozzy influence, the howling tones of vocalist Cpt Ulven are the ideal accompaniment for Kal-EL’s intergalactic anthems, driving home a Sabbathian set of tracks ably spliced with the fuzzy grooves of the aforementioned space lords, Monster Magnet.
Covering Kyuss’ all time classic “Green Machine” is kinda redundant but it’s a cracking tune nonetheless and Kal-El have delivered a damn fine rendition. Other than that, Astrodoomeda is simply a supernova, a titanic explosive event that should turn these groove-obsessed, fuzzy riff-wranglers into massive stars.
Feed your engines and look to the skies, with Astrodoomeda Kal-El are showing us all the way to stoner heaven! 8/10
