Frozen In Shadows – Frozen In Shadows – EP Review

For fans of At The Gates, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, The Haunted.....

Frozen In Shadows specialise in high speed At The Gates-esque melodic death metal and feature a star studded cast including luminaries from such revered UK bands as Footprints In The Custard, Prognosis, Impavidus, Vice and Godhand!

With such supreme credentials you can expect Frozen In Shadows to be a half decent act, but this self-titled EP signals the arrival of something rather special.

Short, savage cuts predominate as Frozen In Shadows go about their business with ruthless efficiency. Melodic death/thrash opus “Tides” is a swirling mass of clinical riffing, while “Depths” most recalls the pioneering work found on At The Gates Slaughter Of The Soul. It’s familiar, but no less thrilling and the band are canny enough not to copy their heroes wholesale. Instead, they take the blueprint laid down by the genre’s forefathers and simply go for the throat.

You can’t fuck with the early material of In Flames, The Haunted and Dark Tranquility etc and Frozen In Shadows don’t try to. They are simply playing the music they love, and you can feel it in every blistering lead, every caustic scream and growl and every intricate time change and trade off between guitarists Kyle and Christian.

This is the sound of musicians who sure as hell know their shit. No pretence, no bullshit, no mistaken sense of identity; Frozen In Shadows play time-honoured melodic death metal….and they play it damn well!! 8/10

Frozen In Shadows is due for release on 3rd September, 2018.
