Cist – The Frozen Casket – EP Review

Here lies the skeletal remains of late 80's / early 90's Pestilence, Death and Morgoth!

A riotous blast of old school death metal greets those who dig deep into the underground and exhume Cist‘s ancient burial chamber: for here lies the skeletal remains of late 80’s / early 90’s Pestilence, Death and Morgoth….and there’s still plenty of flesh on these bones!

These Russian Chuck-worshippers sure know their old school death metal and The Frozen Casket will appease those who still salivate over the classic death/thrash conjured by the aforementioned legends of the scene. So authentic it hurts, Cist could be the mutated offspring of Gruesome, such is their ability to open the casket on Chuck Schuldiner/Death’s formidable legacy.

“Injected Obsession” is a particular highlight, recalling the early work of Pestilence with its otherworldly edge honouring the death\thrash colossus that was Consuming Impulse. The rest? That’ll be ripped straight from the pages of Leprosy‘s rulebook and is no worse off for it!

A welcome sound to any ears, The Frozen Casket may be frozen in time but this kind of death metal will never decompose entirely! 7/10

Cist’s The Frozen Casket was released on 16th March 2018 via Camo Pants Records in Europe and will be released on April 27th 2018 via Redefining Darkness Records in the States.
