Saxon – The Solid Book Of Rock – Boxset Review

The complete latter-day Saxon package!

Into The Labyrinth (2009)

Track Listing: Battalions Of Steel / Live To Rock / Demon Sweeney Todd / The Letter / Valley Of The King / Slow Lane Blues / Crime Of Passion / Premonition In D Minor / Voice / Protect Yourselves / Hellcat / Come Rock Of Ages (The Circle Is Complete) / Coming Home [bottleneck version]

Saxon released another upper-tier album with Into The Labyrinth and while it may not be quite as memorable as The Inner Sanctum and Lionheart, it remains a simply superb representation of Saxon’s tried and tested classic heavy metal might and hard rock fire and brimstone!

Opening big with “Battalions Of Steel” (a Saxon epic replete with choral embellishments), Into The Labyrinth also unveiled a few blues numbers, with “Slow Lane Blues” particularly showcasing a Saxon swagger thought long resigned to the history books.

Fear not though metal lovers, “Demon Sweeney Todd” was still a speed metal workout as these boys proved, once and for all, that they live to rock! 7/10

OVERALL REVIEW of Solid Book Of Rock:

Proof that Saxon’s glory days are still to be written, this vast collection of outstanding metal albums not only cements Saxon’s reputation as all-time legends but showcases their ability to hone their sound and deliver consistently impressive metal albums, time after time.

Precious few bands can match them and if you don’t already own these albums then this boxset is mandatory.

In fact, it should be the fuckin’ law! 9/10

  1. Ordered mine, and can’t wait for it to arrive. The only disc I already have from the boxset is Inner Sanctum. That album goes to show how great heavy metal music can be overlooked.

You won’t regret it Glen, it’s an outstanding set. Saxon have been ridiculously consistent over the years and this boxset proves how some of the finest metal of the past 2 decades has been overlooked!

Fully agree with this review. An outstanding set from a very very consistent band. ESSENTIAL
