Gojira – Stranded – Single Review

Source // Gojira

The French ones returneth…..the finest purveyors of pure, primal, crushing, super-heavyweight progressive death metal….the one band on the planet who’s riffs are heavy enough to bring down the sun…..and they’ve metamorphosed into a different beast….slightly.

Stranded“, taken from the upcoming album Magma, is still monolithically heavy and contains all the ingredients you’d expect from a Gojira stomp-a-thon but there’s a softening to their sound, a further accessibility and adherence to semi-melodic structure that has surely been designed to widen their audience.

And that’s no bad thing.

The cleaner vocals have been washed thoroughly – even Joe Duplantier’s instantly recognisable bark is less death metal in delivery- and the lumbering heft that could always break spines has been lightened enough to embrace a fiendishly catchy chorus and riff progression.

Still recognisably Gojira in essence, this most unique band are set to enter a new dimension, still locked into galaxy-wide grooves but embracing a wider universe of sound and receptiveness.  If “Stranded” is to be an indication of where forthcoming album Magma will take us, then we’re in for seriously some hot shit! 9/10

We are in agreement on this for sure; I enjoyed it a lot. I’ve heard some REALLY negative comments (even a very negative comparison to Korn!?), but I found it enjoyably heavy and catchy. I’m sure it will be a crowd favorite live as well! Cheers!

Thanks Karl. It’s still Gojira (certainly nuthin’ like Korn!) and still colossal….can’t blame them for slightly polishing their sound. New album will be a belter \m/
