Desolate Pathway – Into The Realms – Single Review
Desolate Pathway have a knack for bringing earthly elements into their music, a tangible physicality that pushes their concepts into the realms of 100% listener immersion and after tackling medieval warfare on 2014’s Valley Of The King, they now turn their attention to Greek Mythology.
“Into The Realms Of Poseidon” and “Tales Of Glaucus” sees Vince Hempstead (now handling vocal duties after the departure of Simon Stanton) and co. slightly soften their classic doom metal sound, offering a delicately balanced surge of nautical narration and nuanced songwriting on both tracks; culminating in a formidable showing as undeniably powerful as Poseidon himself.
The shadow of Candlemass and Solitude Aeternus still looms large but Desolate Pathway are defiantly forging their own path as standard bearers for traditional British heavy, riff-based, doom metal. Warmly nostalgic, the smoothest of tones and a truly epic delivery have converged to make Into The Realms as essential to doom fans as the exquisite Valley Of The King.
As a precursor to their forthcoming second album, these two tracks are the kind to make tsunami sized waves in doom metal circles! 8/10
