5. Dying Fetus – Destroy The Opposition (2000)
Rescuing death metal from its law of diminishing returns, Dying Fetus were signed by Relapse for their third album and the stunning result was Destroy The Opposition; a statement of bulldozing intent if ever there was one.
Featuring tremolo riffing, accomplished blast-beats, Demilich-inspired growls and the heaviest, bowel-scraping grooves this side of NYDM legends Suffocation, Destroy The Opposition was modern death metal gold and Relapse instantly recognised its true value.
The deathcore bands who came to prominence a decade later were blatantly paying attention when this political sucker punch arrived in 2000 but it’s Dying Fetus who are still breaking the boundaries; their fan-assisted stint on the main stage at Download back in 2013 proving their long-standing appeal.
Through Silver In Blood is a truly terrifying listen that leaves you feeling drained after playing it. Heavy in every sense of the word.
Saw them in Belfast when the album came out as support for Entombed. The crowd was just transfixed on the stage for the duration of their set, poor Entombed didn’t stand a chance coming on after them.
incantation > nile and dying fetus
sorry but old school death metal beats modern death metal any day
Incantantion – Onward to Golgotha?
Great list, but I’d add Incantation, Burnt by the Sun, Coalesce, and Necrophagist.
