Worship Metal Album Of The Week – Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard – Y Proffwyd Dwyll

Source // Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard

We’ve been waxing lyrical about Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard for the last few months, heralding them as the finest new doom band on the planet and announcing that “Cithuula”, the first single from Y Proffwyd Dwyll, was a song that had “no right to be so catchy, so alluring and yet so sonically massive and supremely heavy”.

So, what’s their trick? Could it be the almighty heft conjured by the most sloth-like, lumbering doom riffs we’ve heard in years? Could it be the swirling synths and intergalactic noise that add layers to their already formidable sound? Could it be the uniquely ethereal and spine-tingling vocals delivered by the bewitching Jessica Ball? Of course, the answer is simple, it’s all 3 combined and topped off with an all-consuming hubbub that emits the kind of earth-shattering ripples only a 24 hour Electric Wizard/Kylesa orgy could muster!

To be honest, Y Proffwyd Dwyll (or The False Prophet if translation is required) should have been Worship Metal’s album of the week last week (it came out on September 30th). Hell, it should be album of the week every damn week!

One thing is for sure, with two astonishing albums under their belt in just a 10 month period, the time is right to join these enchanting doom dealers on their mind-altering trip through the cosmos….who knows where they’ll end up next! 10/10
