Rumahoy – The Triumph Of Piracy – Album Review

AHOY!

Ahoy! You land-lubbing muthafuckers are in for a rum-addled treat if you board the good ship Rumahoy and set sail for pirate metal infested waters!

Formed in the ancient North Carolinian fishing village of Ocracoke, Rumahoy first set sail in 2012 when vocalist Captain Yarrface was experimenting with the musical heritage of his ancestors and, of course, The Triumph Of Piracy is utter lunacy. Devoid of anything except pure escapism and best experienced while severely inebriated and attempting to converse with the parrot you’ve stapled to your shoulder (caveat – we do not endorse this type of avian cruelty in any way shape or form)! When Captain Yarrface demands you to walk the plank, you do it….or feel the devastating effects of a cutlass up your jap’s eye. These guys “kill for fun” and these sea-shanties are rife with cheesy keys, piratey-growls and the most ridiculously vibrant pirate-based ditties this side of a Pirates Of A Caribbean appreciation convention.

You know what to expect from this kind of album and Rumahoy offer nothing new. However, the 2 mins of the speed metal-esque “Kill The Trolls” is pure genius. Featuring some thrashed up nonsense about killing trolls – what have trolls got to do with pirates! – it’s completely bonkers and absolutely brilliant.

Akin to maintaining course in turbulent seas, this is pretty rough stuff and pirate metal at its most basic. Rumahoy are simply not in the same 20,000 leagues of Alestorm etc. But, if you’re in the right frame of mind (and fancy dress preferably), The Triumph Of Piracy is a cannon blast of big fuckin’ fun.

Questing for treasure is Rumahoy’s god-given right! AHOY! 6/10
