Hummune – Deity – Single Review

For fans of Crowbar, High On Fire and Catatonic Society.

Like a walrus using your rib cage as a trampoline, Southampton’s Hummune aren’t just heavy, they’re planet destroyingly colossal in the way Mastodon used to be and Crowbar and High On Fire still are.

Deity“, the first track made available from forthcoming album “Face The Fall”, showcases Hummune’s monumental groove and crushing, bruising riffs that pummel and punch the senses and the result is one of the most completely head-bangingly joyous things you can treat your ears to! The unholy roar of frontman Stu Woodward raises hackles but it’s the thunderously cohesive nature of the aural battering that pleases the most. This sort of sludgey groove-machine is supposed to rise from the swamps of America’s Deep South but it turns out that the South Coast of England can also unearth riff-monsters with as much bite and brawling might as our American cousins in Down, Eyehategod and Crowbar. Who’d have thought it!

Hummune’s new album, Face the Fall, is set for release on August 25th and if “Deity” is anything to go by, fans of monstrous riffing and sweat-drenched sludge are in for one hell of a wild ride. 8/10
