With latest album Svartnad just released – and on the receiving end of a Worship Metal Album of the Week recommendation no less(!) – Worship Metal corners one man blackened death metal behemoth Lars Peter Karlsson and quizzes him on life, metal and guilty pleasures!

1. So….what are T.P.F.D.T up to then?

“The new album, Svartnad, was released on May 16th, lots of promotional work around that right now. But it’s all good.”

2. Which album/artist/gig/experience made you first realise you ‘worshipped’ heavy metal?

“I was surrounded by music like Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Mountain etc. from an early age. But when I heard Under The Blade with Twisted Sister for the first time a whole new world was open for me. I heard Accept’s Restless and Wild around the same time, also Iron Maiden’s The Number Of The Beast. I think they all were released the same year. It was my gateway into Heavy Metal.”

3. Name the one album that epitomises metal over all others.

“If we are talking regular heavy metal I would say Judas Priest’s Painkiller. It doesn’t get more metal than that.”

4. Which guilty pleasure album do you listen to the most? Be honest now!

“I have never been ashamed of any kind of music or bands that I listen to. I have always had a wide taste in music. There are many but I would say Pink Floyd and The Cure.”

5. You have one opportunity to introduce your band to the entire world, which song from your back catalogue do you blast them away with?

“If I could choose from my full back catalogue I would make a mixture between the Maze of Torment track ”Dream of Blood” and ”10 Years of Nothing” with Thrown. If it’s from the debut of TPFDT I would pick ”Crave the Fire”.”

6. You find yourselves booked on a mammoth, 12 month, non-stop, around the world tour. Which 5 essential items do you take with you in order to survive?

“Porn, drugs, glue, Mayhem’s Ordo Ad Chao and the bible.”

7. What’s been your most memorable stage/tour experience to date?

“A single show with Dissection in ’95 when I was in Maze of Torment. Candlemass 2004 (when I was in Deceiver) and Sadus 2005 (when I was in Maze of Torment). Both were at a festival.”

8. You’re given the chance to handpick the ultimate 4-piece death metal supergroup (living or deceased). Who’s in the line-up?

“Chuck Schuldiner, Trey Azagthoth, Chris Reifert and Jeff Becerra.”

9. Hard Rock & Heavy Metal is blatantly the greatest thing ever invented but what’s the second greatest invention of all time?

“Vinyl.”

10. It turns out Ozzy’s luscious long hair is imbued with time-travelling qualities and just one stroke of his lion’s mane can transport you back to any rock/metal gig of your choice. Who do you go and see?

“A coincidence as I would choose any of the tours Randy Rhoads did with Ozzy, or early Black Sabbath. An early show with Pink Floyd is also up high on that list.”

Svartnad is available now….blackened death metal doesn’t get more feral and ferocious!
