2. Pallbearer – Heartless
Pallbearer did it again, delivering some of the most exquisite melodic doom on the planet while adding further prog influences to their already trademarked sound. Heavier than ever, Heartless remained ironically heartfelt and obliquely organic, as the band opened up their sonic palette and unleashed chug-heavy highlights such as the outstanding “Cruel Road”.
With an emphasis often on power and pace, Pallbearer’s ornate complexity was this time backed by a fevered fury not since experienced. This was the sound of a band firing on all cylinders and delivering their magnum opus in the process.
You can permanently file Pallbearer next to Mastodon as the foremost purveyors of progressively minded metal (doom or otherwise) and their astonishing evolution appears to be complete.
An impeccable discography somehow got better!
