Fear Factory are often credited with merging the regimented bleakness of Industrial bands – such as  Godflesh and Pitchshifter – with the speed and complexity found in Thrash and Death Metal but that is to overlook the importance of Strapping Young Lad. They upped the ante for tempo, picking technique and percussive complexity that would become the norm by the advent of the Djent movement and without them there would be no Lamb of God and no Periphery and that’s just for starters!

1995’s Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing may have laid out Townsend’s stall musically but it wasn’t until 1997 that the combination of the right line up, the right songs and the right level of barely controlled fury allowed him to create City; one of the greatest Metal records ever committed to tape.

Don’t believe us? Just listen to “Oh My Fucking God”. It’s not much of a song title but that’s exactly what you’ll say!

About Stuart Bell (55 Articles)
I was born in 1975 with a pile of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple vinyl next to my cot. I ate off a sheet of ply-board propped up between two Marshall cabs and shortly after I learned to read and write I learned the E minor chord and the pentatonic scale. One day my Dad bought me Iron Maiden's first album. Metallica's Ride the Lightning followed. Then, things got serious. I have held almost every rank in the Army of Heavy Metal: Fan, drunk fan, roadie, guitarist, producer and label scout. My Wife knows what Mastodon's Crack The Skye is about and my child can play Breaking the Law on piano. Go figure.
