6 Reasons Why Morbid Angel’s Illud Divinum Insanus Is Better Than You Think!

It can't be as bad as you think it is, right?!

We Thought Metal Was Supposed To Be About Individuality and Self Expression?

On the run up to Illud Divinum Insanus’ release, Azagthoth made references to a love of music that he believed to be inspiring. Words were bandied about like ‘terror core’ and other outdated dance music sub-genres and regardless of how ‘shocking’ these comments may have seemed, it’s utterly irrelevant that Azagthoth’s taste in techno would have been less than cutting edge even in the late 90’s. It’s irrelevant that many have tried to emulate electronic music on guitar and failed miserably. What is relevant is that he used extreme metal to express himself. He used that same right of expression that gave you some of the most treasured records in your collection. In short, if you slagged off this album, you contributed to the decline of western civilisation.

We hope you’re happy.

Let’s face it, the reason why most of us have found our way to this particular mode of cultural expression is the freedom and sense of community it offers. On the day your favourite death metal band were openly harangued for failing to toe the line with genre norms – that freedom died a little.

Morbid Angel made artistic choices. Those choices didn’t suit you. That’s a shame. If you reacted by using social media to character assassinate them, then you my friend, are a ballbag!

About Stuart Bell (55 Articles)
I was born in 1975 with a pile of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple vinyl next to my cot. I ate off a sheet of ply-board propped up between two Marshall cabs and shortly after I learned to read and write I learned the E minor chord and the pentatonic scale. One day my Dad bought me Iron Maiden's first album. Metallica's Ride the Lightning followed. Then, things got serious. I have held almost every rank in the Army of Heavy Metal: Fan, drunk fan, roadie, guitarist, producer and label scout. My Wife knows what Mastodon's Crack The Skye is about and my child can play Breaking the Law on piano. Go figure.
